Hylton Jolliffe
The Basics
- Grew up in Boston/Cambridge, the effective central point of Beeline’s partners.
- Art history major, architecture minor; remain a design and culture vulture.
- Moved to Hong Kong after college, eager for adventure: worked for a small magazine start-up where I got my first taste for the fun (and challenges) of the entrepreneurial life; traveled a ton; made life-long friends.
- Back to the US to NYC as an editor at a “Silicon Alley” start-up that flamed out, and about which the book “Burn Rate” was written, and then on to an international nonprofit for whom I ran their websites.
- Founded Corante, the world’s first blog media company, in 2000. Proud to have created a platform for the writing of dozens of great thinkers on technology, business, media, legal issues, science, and more.
- School: Trinity College
- Books: unlike Lois, haven’t written any, and hardly read them anymore, to some shame (but do read 2-3 newspapers and scores of sites and blogs a day, and dozens of magazines a week).
My slogans
- Keep it real.
- Keep it simple.
- The future is bright.
- You can’t buy attention, you have to earn it.
Things I care about
- Sharing knowledge.
- Deepening understanding.
- Connecting people with ideas.
Sites/communities I like
- New York Times: remains an essential source for newshounds like me and I think they’re actually pretty savvy about social media.
- Amazon reviews: practical, useful resource.
- JP Moms, a newsgroup/bulletin board, powered by BigTent, for new parents in Jamaica Plain, where we live with our September 27, 2007-born litte cutie.
3 things most people don’t know about me
* I’ve studied French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, and Tibetan (and can’t claim proficiency in any of them).
* I spent three weeks in a Buddhist monastery near the base camp of Everest, hardly speaking to anyone (wouldn’t recommend it).
* I despise the nostalgiazation of the past. And egotism.
My playlist to create by
- “Lose Yourself,” Eminem: Gets the carpe-diem blood flowing.
- “You Sexy Thing”, Hot Chocolate: Just start moving when I hear this. Shakes things loose.
- “Oxford Comma”, Vampire Weekend: silly, light, absurd, all good for freeing the mind.
- “Remember You’re a Womble”, Wombles: anti-nostalgiazation comment above notwithstanding, this recently rediscovered song (thanks iTunes) from my childhood takes me back, in a good way. Its simple messages: “Just remember we’re so lucky to be wombling free.”
- “Sometimes You Can’t Make it on your Own”, U2: We’re all in this together - let’s help each other.
- “Pictures of You”: The Cure: Its title, emotion, and dare I admit it the HP ad from a few years ago, immediately activate my imagination.
- “Singer Sing,”: Dean & Britta. Mellow and calming (as well as alliterative, an always useful device in engaging readers with writing, or listeners with lyrics).
- Apple ad - Think Different. This is not a song, but I’m just an unapologetic sucker for this ad and have watched/listened to it countless times. Beautiful little piece on innovation, possibility, progress.
